Thursday September 6, 2012 I drove to South Lake Tahoe, picked up my wilderness permit before their office closed, then killed some time at the casinos until I got bored. Then I picked up a sandwich for dinner and drove out to the Big Meadow trailhead, arriving around 5:30pm. I still had some cell reception, so I was able to chat with my wife for a bit in an otherwise quiet U.S. Forest Service campground. There were pit toilets and bear canisters, but best of all it was free! I got to sleep around 9pm.
